Suspected ATM Theft Attempt Reported in Pandua, Hooghly

Pandua, Hooghly: A suspected attempt to break open an ATM and steal money was reported in Pandua, Hooghly district, on Sunday, September 20, 2026.

The incident reportedly took place at an ATM counter near Kamarpara Kali Temple on GT Road. The adjoining private bank branch was closed at the time, while the ATM counter remained open. According to local reports, there was no security guard present at the counter.

According to reports, a young man allegedly entered the ATM counter carrying a stone and attempted to damage the machine.

Hearing the sound of the alleged vandalism, a local youth identified as Bishnupad Murmu went towards the ATM. He reportedly saw the man damaging the machine, pulled down the shutter from outside and locked the counter before informing Pandua Police Station.

Police subsequently reached the spot and detained the young man from inside the ATM counter. Police identified him as Mohammed Sohel, 22, a resident of the Magura area of Pandua.

The upper portion of the ATM machine was reportedly damaged in the incident. Police are investigating whether the suspect managed to take any money from the machine and are also examining the circumstances and motive behind the alleged attempt.

The investigation is underway.
