Four Tourists from Uttar Pradesh Booked for Alleged Vandalism at Shillong Homestay

Shillong, Meghalaya:Four tourists from Uttar Pradesh have been booked after they allegedly damaged a homestay in Shillong following a dispute with the property's management. The incident has drawn widespread attention, with videos of the damaged accommodation circulating online and prompting calls for strict action.

According to the complaint lodged by the homestay owner, the group was asked to leave the premises after allegedly violating house rules. The management claimed the tourists brought unauthorised visitors into the property and failed to comply with regulations despite repeated requests.

The disagreement reportedly escalated before the guests checked out. The owner alleged that the group intentionally damaged furniture, bathroom fittings, walls and other items inside the rooms, leaving behind significant losses. Images shared by the property management showed broken fixtures and scattered debris, highlighting the extent of the damage.

Following the complaint, Meghalaya Police registered a case and launched an investigation to identify and trace the accused. Officials said evidence, including CCTV footage and statements from witnesses, is being examined as part of the probe. Police have assured that appropriate legal action will be taken if the allegations are substantiated.

The incident has sparked concern among members of Shillong's hospitality industry, who say such behaviour tarnishes the image of responsible travellers and places an unnecessary burden on local businesses. Several tourism stakeholders have called for strict enforcement of the law to deter similar incidents in the future.

Authorities have urged visitors to respect local laws, property and community guidelines while travelling. The investigation remains ongoing, and police are expected to take further action based on the findings.

This incident has once again highlighted the importance of responsible tourism, with industry representatives stressing that mutual respect between visitors and hosts is essential for maintaining Meghalaya's reputation as one of India's most welcoming travel destinations.
