From a Street Food Cart to 'Mann Ki Baat': Bengaluru’s Ningamma and the Complete Guide to PM SVANidhi Scheme

The inspiring journey of T.S. Ningamma, a street-food vendor in Bengaluru, demonstrates how formal credit access combined with sheer hard work can build financial self-reliance. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recognized her resilience during his 'Mann Ki Baat' broadcast, highlighting her journey as a benchmark for grassroots entrepreneurship.

Hailing from Hassan and settled in Bengaluru, Ningamma and her husband operate a pushcart eatery near Hosahalli Metro Station on Magadi Road, serving traditional breakfast items like idli, vada, and dosa. To scale her business and eliminate dependency on high-interest private lenders, she leveraged the PM SVANidhi (PM Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi) micro-credit scheme.

What Is the PM SVANidhi Scheme? Key Benefits for Street Vendors
Launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), the scheme provides formal working capital credit to urban and semi-urban street vendors:

a) Collateral-Free Progressive Loans:
-- 1st Tranche: ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 working capital loan (1-year repayment).
-- 2nd Tranche: ₹20,000 to ₹25,000 upon timely repayment of the first loan.
-- 3rd Tranche: ₹50,000 advanced working capital upon successful completion of earlier cycles.

b) 7% Interest Subsidy:

Vendors maintaining regular EMI repayments receive an interest subsidy of 7% per annum, credited directly to their bank accounts on a quarterly basis.

c) Cashback for Digital UPI Payments:

Adopting digital payments earns vendors monthly incentives of up to ₹100, totaling up to ₹1,200 per year in direct cashback rewards.
