Government Land Encroachment Concerns Raised in North Bengal

Demand for survey and higher-level inquiry into alleged unauthorised constructions near government areas

Concerns have been raised over alleged unauthorised constructions and commercial activities on government land in several parts of North Bengal, including areas around government offices in and near Jalpaiguri.

According to local concerns, some portions of government land are allegedly being used for residential structures, shops and other commercial activities without clear information regarding lawful allotment, lease arrangements or applicable revenue payments. Residents have urged the authorities to conduct a detailed survey to determine whether such structures have valid permissions.

Questions have also been raised over whether government revenue is being adequately collected from land or properties being used for commercial purposes. However, the specific extent of any revenue loss and the legal status of individual properties would need to be established through official land records and departmental verification.

There are also concerns regarding alleged encroachments in areas adjoining government offices, railway properties and other public land. Residents have called for a comprehensive identification of such properties and verification of the documents and permissions under which they are being used.

Some local residents have questioned whether unauthorised constructions could have continued for a long period without the knowledge of the concerned authorities. They have sought clarification from the administration regarding the monitoring and enforcement mechanisms in place.

Demand for inquiry

Residents and concerned citizens have urged the state government and district administration to conduct a higher-level inquiry into the alleged encroachments, verify land ownership and usage records, and take appropriate action wherever violations are established.

They have also requested that government land being used without valid permission be identified and that applicable revenue and regulatory provisions be enforced.

Need for official verification

The allegations regarding unauthorised occupation, loss of government revenue or any involvement of officials or political representatives require verification through official records and an appropriate inquiry. The concerned departments and authorities should also be given an opportunity to present their response.
