LPU Suspends Classes for 10 Days After Violent Student Protests in Punjab

Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara, Punjab, has suspended regular classes for 10 days from September 28 following violent student protests on campus. The university has also postponed its mid-term examinations until further notice as authorities work to restore normalcy.

The protests began after allegations circulated on social media claiming that a female student had been sexually assaulted on the university campus. The allegations have not been established, and LPU has denied that such an incident occurred, describing the claims as false and unverified.

During the unrest, large numbers of students gathered on campus and on nearby roads. Reports said university property was damaged, vehicles were set on fire and a stretch of National Highway-44 was blocked. Police were deployed to control the situation, with clashes reported during the protests.

Punjab Police have registered an FIR and constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the allegations and examine available evidence. Officials have urged students and the public not to circulate unverified information while the inquiry is underway.

LPU has advised students to remain calm and follow official communications. Students staying on campus have also been advised to avoid unnecessary movement, while the university has allowed students to travel to their hometowns in consultation with their parents or guardians during the 10-day suspension period.
