Mumbai Police have arrested a 26-year-old man in connection with the alleged theft of a police walkie-talkie from a beat chowky in the Two Tank area under the jurisdiction of VP Road Police Station.

The accused has been identified as Mohammad Niyaz alias Faizan, a native of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. According to police, he does not have a fixed residence in Mumbai and is known to stay around railway stations.

The walkie-talkie was reportedly kept at the Two Tank beat post for charging when it went missing on September 17. Following the incident, police registered a case against an unidentified person and launched an investigation.

Police Scan Around 700 CCTV Cameras

As part of the investigation, police examined footage from around 700 CCTV cameras installed in the area. Investigators reportedly tracked the suspect's movements and reconstructed the route he allegedly took after leaving the beat post with the device.

The investigation eventually led police to Andheri Railway Station, where the accused was apprehended. The stolen walkie-talkie was also recovered, police said.

Accused Allegedly Says Repeated Ringing Irritated Him

During questioning, the accused allegedly told police that he took the walkie-talkie because its repeated ringing irritated him.

Police are continuing to question him to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the theft and his movements after the incident.

Officials have also indicated that the accused may have mental-health-related issues, but the exact nature of any such condition has not yet been established, and further assessment is underway.

Police are now investigating whether the accused has been involved in any other similar incidents.
