PM Modi Sets Tone for BRICS Summit, Says Discussions Will Focus on Global Challenges and Welfare

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set the tone for the upcoming BRICS Summit in India, expressing confidence that the meeting will lead to positive and meaningful discussions on major global issues and ways to promote global welfare.

Ahead of the two-day summit beginning on Saturday, PM Modi highlighted the importance of BRICS as a platform for cooperation among emerging economies and said that leaders from across the world would come together to discuss issues of common concern.

PM Modi is also scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday. The talks are expected to cover key areas including trade, energy security, cross-border payment mechanisms and geopolitical developments.

The discussions are also likely to touch upon ongoing conflicts and possible pathways towards resolving geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe and West Asia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to address the BRICS Business Forum on September 11, ahead of the leaders' summit. The forum brings together business representatives from BRICS member countries and focuses on strengthening economic and commercial cooperation.

The main BRICS Summit on Saturday will bring together several world leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping.

BRICS has increasingly become an important platform for emerging economies to coordinate on economic and global governance issues. Its agenda covers areas such as development, finance, technology, trade and people-to-people cooperation.

India is holding its fourth BRICS Chairship in 2026, with the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” The theme reflects India's focus on development, sustainability, innovation and strengthening cooperation among countries of the Global South.

With several major geopolitical and economic challenges on the global stage, the summit is expected to provide an important platform for countries to discuss cooperation and seek solutions to shared challenges.
