📚 Teachers’ Day | A Sociological Reflection

Long after we forget the dates, definitions, and pages we memorised, we remember the teacher who made us believe that we could become something more. Sometimes, a teacher enters our life for only a chapter, yet leaves behind an idea, a question, or a way of seeing the world that stays with us forever.

A teacher is not merely someone who transfers knowledge; a teacher is an agent of socialisation. Through classrooms, conversations and everyday interactions, teachers transmit values, norms, aspirations and ways of understanding society. Education, therefore, is not simply about creating individuals—it is also about reproducing and transforming society.

The sociology of education reminds us that learning is deeply connected to social structures. Bourdieu showed how education can reproduce existing inequalities through cultural capital, while Paulo Freire imagined education as a means of developing critical consciousness and challenging oppression.

The most meaningful teachers, therefore, do more than prepare us to succeed within society. They teach us to question it, understand its inequalities and imagine something better.

This Teachers’ Day, let us remember those who did not merely teach us lessons, but quietly shaped the way we see ourselves, others and the world around us.
