On September 5, India celebrates Teachers’ Day in memory of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and honours the teachers who shape our lives. On this special day, it is impossible not to remember Dr. Sri Sri Sri Shivakumara Swamiji of Siddaganga Mutt, whose life stands as a powerful example of what a true Guru can mean to society. Siddaganga Mutt, also known as Siddaganga Kshetra, is a renowned spiritual and educational centre located near Tumakuru (Tumkur) in Karnataka, approximately 5 km from the city.

A teacher gives knowledge, but a Guru gives direction. A teacher may prepare a student for an examination, but a Guru prepares a person for life. Sri Shivakumara Swamiji lived this philosophy through decades of selfless service and education.

Under his leadership, Siddaganga Mutt became a great centre of education and social service. His vision was simple yet revolutionary: no child should be deprived of education because of poverty. The Mutt’s Gurukula tradition provided thousands of underprivileged students with education, food and shelter.

For Swamiji, education was never limited to textbooks and classrooms. He understood that a hungry child cannot concentrate on learning and that a child without shelter cannot dream freely. Therefore, food, accommodation and education became essential parts of his service.

His educational mission eventually grew into a vast network of schools, colleges and technical institutions, giving generations of students the opportunity to build better lives. Many who entered the Mutt with limited resources went on to become teachers, engineers, doctors, administrators, professionals and responsible citizens.

What made Swamiji extraordinary was that he taught not only through words, but through his own life. His simplicity, discipline, compassion, humility and dedication to service became lessons for everyone around him. He personally interacted with students and was known for teaching subjects such as English and Sanskrit.

He was affectionately called "Nadedaduva Devaru" (The Walking God) by people across Karnataka. Yet perhaps another description suits him equally well: he was a living classroom. His life taught that true education is not merely about earning a livelihood; it is about becoming a better human being.

The greatest legacy of a teacher is not a building or a statue. It is the life of a student. Every student whose future was transformed through Swamiji’s educational vision became part of his legacy. When those students went on to educate their children, serve society and help others, his teachings travelled from one generation to another.

In today’s world, students have access to enormous amounts of information through technology and artificial intelligence. But information can never completely replace the guidance of a Guru. Technology can provide answers; a teacher provides wisdom, judgement, values and encouragement. Most importantly, a great teacher makes a student believe, "I can do this."

Sri Shivakumara Swamiji passed away in 2019 at the age of 111, but his teaching did not end. His institutions continue, his students continue, and his philosophy of Dasoha — service through food, education and care — continues to inspire society.

On this Teachers’ Day, let us remember Sri Shivakumara Swamiji not merely as a spiritual leader, but as a Guru who dedicated his entire life to educating and uplifting generations.

He did not simply build institutions. He built opportunities.

He did not simply educate students. He gave them dignity and hope.

He did not simply teach lessons. He taught the meaning of service.

And he did not merely become a teacher to thousands. He became a Guru to generations.

On this Teachers’ Day, let us bow with gratitude to the great Guru of Siddaganga Mutt.
