Trump Defends Military Action Against Iran in UN Address, Calls for Economic Pressure on Tehran

US President Donald Trump defended his administration’s military action against Iran in an address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 22. He urged countries to maintain economic pressure on Tehran and said Iran faced a choice between reaching an agreement and facing further US military action.

Trump said the United States had targeted Iran’s nuclear programme and weakened its military capabilities. He reiterated that Washington would not allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons and called for continued economic isolation of Iran until, in his words, it ends attacks on commercial shipping and its support for groups he described as terrorist organisations.

On the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Trump said the United States was continuing efforts to reach a settlement. He also highlighted developments in the Western Hemisphere, including the US military operation in Venezuela that, according to his account, resulted in the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro. Trump said Washington was working with Venezuelan leaders and referred to a major oil agreement between the United States and Venezuela.

On Mexico, Trump focused on efforts against transnational drug trafficking. He said his administration had designated drug cartels as foreign terrorist organisations and called for stronger action against them. He also referred to ongoing negotiations with Cuba and said his administration was seeking what he described as a fundamental change in the situation there.

Trump also discussed Greenland, describing the Arctic territory as strategically important to US and wider regional security. He said an agreement with Denmark and Greenland would give the United States expanded responsibility for security on the territory and announced plans for a larger US military presence, including two military bases. These remarks reflected Trump's description of the agreement and proposed arrangements.

AI and international institutions

A significant portion of the address focused on artificial intelligence. Trump said the United States would promote the development of AI and argued against what he described as international attempts to impose excessive controls on the technology. He also discussed the strategic importance of maintaining US leadership in the field.

Trump criticised several international institutions, including the International Criminal Court, UNESCO and the UN Human Rights Council. Regarding the ICC, he argued that the court had no jurisdiction over the United States and called on countries to withdraw from it.

He also criticised the UN Human Rights Council, arguing that it focused disproportionately on the United States while failing to give sufficient attention to abuses elsewhere. He questioned the role of UNESCO and other international organisations and argued that international bodies should not impose policies that, in his view, conflict with national sovereignty.
