VALOUR AT 35,000 FEET

On September 30, 2026, flydubai Flight FZ1073 en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv plunged into an acute mid-air crisis. A sudden violent confrontation erupted at altitude when the co-pilot attacked Captain Smit Machchhar. Despite sustaining severe stab wounds, Machchhar exhibited decisive presence of mind. Knowing the cockpit door was bulletproof and magnetically locked from the outside under post-9/11 security protocols, he managed to reach the release controls to unlock the door.
His action allowed cabin crew and passengers to breach the flight deck, subdue the assailant, stabilize the aircraft after an abrupt descent, and safely divert the Boeing 737 to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia—saving all 174 passengers and crew on board.
From Textiles to the Flight Deck
Machchhar’s journey into the skies followed an untraditional trajectory. Raised in Mumbai, he initially enrolled in textile engineering, planning to enter and expand his family's established textile enterprise.
While pursuing management studies at Mumbai's Welingkar Institute of Management, an aviation seminar altered his career path. Intrigued by commercial flight operations, he pivoted toward professional flight training, earning his commercial pilot licence and entering commercial aviation in June 2011.

Career Milestones and Professional Standing
Machchhar built an extensive operating record across commercial twin-jet airliners:
SpiceJet (2011–2022): Over an 11-year tenure with the Indian low-cost carrier, he progressed through the ranks from first officer to Line Training Captain, playing an active role in training and mentoring incoming junior pilots.
flydubai (2022–Present): In June 2022, Machchhar joined Dubai-based carrier flydubai as a Direct Entry Captain.
Flight Hours: He accumulated over 9,750 flight hours, with more than 6,400 hours logged as Pilot in Command (PIC), primarily on Boeing 737 Next Generation (737-800) and Boeing 737 MAX 8/9 variants.
Colleagues and flight crews have recognized Machchhar for his steady demeanor and emphasis on cockpit resource management—particularly the vital partnership between pilots and cabin attendants during in-flight emergencies.
Global Recognition
Following the emergency landing in Tabuk, where Machchhar was stabilized before undergoing medical care, international civil aviation bodies and world leaders issued commendations. His composure under direct physical peril has brought renewed focus to cockpit crew screening, cross-national cockpit security protocols, and the role of individual human resilience in civil aviation safety.
