Over 150 Students Hospitalized After Mid-Day Meal Incident in Saharsa, Bihar

In a shocking incident in Bihar’s Saharsa district, over 150 schoolchildren were reportedly taken ill after consuming their mid-day meal on Thursday. The disturbing event unfolded at the Middle School Balwaha, located in the Mahishi block, where students began experiencing symptoms like stomach aches, vomiting, and dizziness shortly after their meal.

Reports indicate that several children even fainted, prompting immediate action from local authorities. Teams from the police and health department swiftly arrived at the school to attend to the ailing students. Following initial assessments, District Magistrate Deepesh Kumar revealed that approximately 115 children were transferred to the Sadar Hospital, while an additional 40 to 50 were admitted to a community health center.

Kumar assured the public that the condition of all affected children was stable, stating, “Doctors have informed us that some of the children are experiencing mild fever, but there is no cause for alarm as they are under proper observation.” The incident has raised concerns among parents and the community, who are now questioning the safety and quality of the meals provided under the mid-day meal scheme.

According to the school’s acting principal, Anupama Kumari, the meal served that day was sourced from a non-governmental organization. The situation escalated when a child’s plate was reportedly observed to contain something unusual. While some speculated the presence of an insect, local villagers claimed it resembled a snake, further intensifying fears regarding food safety in schools.

This incident comes against the backdrop of ongoing discussions about the nutritional value and safety standards of mid-day meals provided to students across India. The mid-day meal scheme, aimed at improving the nutritional status of children and boosting school attendance, has faced criticism in the past due to sporadic incidents of food poisoning and contamination.

As investigations into this alarming event continue, parents and educators alike are left grappling with the implications for the future of the program. The need for stringent quality checks and accountability in food preparation and distribution has never been more crucial. The health and well-being of children must take precedence, as they are the future of the nation.
