**Paraguay Shock Germany in Penalty Shootout to Reach World Cup Round of 16**

**Boston, June 29:** Paraguay pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup by knocking out four-time champions Germany in a dramatic Round of 32 encounter that ended 1-1 after extra time before the South Americans triumphed 4-3 in a tense penalty shootout.

Germany entered the contest as favorites and controlled possession for long periods, but Paraguay’s disciplined defending and clinical finishing kept the European giants under constant pressure. The breakthrough came just before halftime when Julio Enciso rose highest to head home, giving Paraguay a surprise 1-0 lead.

Germany responded strongly after the restart. Kai Havertz restored parity with a well-taken header from Florian Wirtz’s cross, setting up an entertaining second half. Despite creating several opportunities, Germany failed to find the decisive goal as Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill produced a string of outstanding saves.

The deadlock continued through extra time. Germany thought they had secured victory late in the match, but a VAR review ruled out the goal, leaving the contest to be settled by penalties.

Paraguay displayed remarkable composure from the spot, converting four of their five penalties. Germany faltered under pressure, missing crucial attempts, before José Canale calmly converted the winning penalty to spark jubilant celebrations among the Paraguay players and supporters.

The victory sends Paraguay into the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the France–Sweden clash. For Germany, the defeat marks another disappointing World Cup campaign despite dominating large portions of the match.

The result is expected to be remembered as one of the tournament’s greatest shocks, highlighting Paraguay’s resilience, tactical discipline, and determination against one of football’s traditional powerhouses.
