Puducherry Assembly Elections: CM N Rangasamy Triumphs in Thattanchavady Constituency

Puducherry’s political landscape witnessed a significant event on Monday as Chief Minister N Rangasamy secured a decisive victory in the Thattanchavady constituency during the Assembly elections. Representing the All India NR Congress, Rangasamy received a total of 10,024 votes, successfully defeating his closest rival, E Vinayagam of the Neyam Makkal Kazhagam, by a margin of 4,441 votes.

This victory marks a pivotal moment for Rangasamy, who not only clinched the Thattanchavady seat but is also reportedly leading in the Mangalam constituency, according to preliminary reports from The Times of India. However, it is important to note that the Election Commission has yet to release detailed trends from these constituencies on its official website.

As of 4 PM on election day, the National Democratic Alliance, spearheaded by Rangasamy’s All India NR Congress, was showing promising results by leading in 17 Assembly seats. In contrast, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-Congress coalition was ahead in five constituencies. Additionally, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam secured a win in one seat, while its ally, Neyam Makkal Kazhagam, is currently leading in another.

Puducherry’s Assembly consists of 33 seats, out of which three members are nominated by the Union government, thus granting them full powers akin to the directly elected 30 MLAs. The majority threshold for the Assembly stands at 16 seats, but with the inclusion of the three nominated members, any party or coalition must secure a total of 17 seats to establish a ruling majority.

The recent polls were conducted following a special intensive revision of the electoral rolls in Puducherry, which was part of a broader exercise that included 11 other states and Union Territories. This revision resulted in a decrease of 77,367 voters in the Union Territory, raising questions about voter engagement and turnout in the electoral process. As the counting of votes continues and trends emerge, the political fervor in Puducherry is palpable, with citizens closely observing the developments that could shape the future governance of the region.
