Rebellion in TMC: Mamata Banerjee Ousted by Dissident MLAs

In a dramatic turn of events on Monday, a faction of rebel MLAs from West Bengal’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) officially announced the ousting of Mamata Banerjee from her position as party chairperson. Led by Ritabrata Banerjee, these dissident lawmakers convened a special session to elect a new leadership structure, proclaiming Arup Roy as the head of what they labeled the ‘real TMC.’

During the session, Ritabrata Banerjee emphasized that Roy, a long-standing member of the party, was chosen for his dedication and experience. “We have formed a national working committee today, comprising 30 members, including Roy,” he stated. This move, he argued, aligns with the TMC’s Constitution, which mandates the formation of a national committee every three years. The last panel was established in February 2022, making this action a timely necessity in the eyes of the rebels.

The rebel faction aims to consolidate their control and has also expressed a desire for Mamata Banerjee to continue serving as a chief adviser within the party, indicating a possibly cordial relationship despite the upheaval. However, they plan to inform the Election Commission about their decisions and are poised to establish state and district committees, along with the creation of spokesperson roles and other organizational bodies.

In the midst of this internal conflict, Mamata Banerjee’s supporters have voiced their concerns regarding the legitimacy of the rebel MLAs’ actions. Former minister Madan Mitra, a staunch ally of Banerjee, asserted that the dissenting group lacks the authority to alter the foundational structure of the TMC. “The party has a Constitution that governs its operations, and these actions may not hold any legal standing,” he remarked.

This schism within the TMC reflects deeper tensions within the party, especially given the backdrop of its performance in recent electoral contests. With growing unrest among its ranks, the TMC faces challenges not only from within but also from external political pressures. How this internal strife plays out will be pivotal as West Bengal gears up for future elections, with the stability of the TMC now hanging in the balance.
