Supreme Court Grants Anticipatory Bail to Congress Leader Pawan Khera Amid Controversy

The Supreme Court of India has granted anticipatory bail to Congress leader Pawan Khera in a case initiated by the Assam Police, which has stirred considerable political debate. The decision came after the Supreme Court heard Khera’s petition challenging a prior order from the Gauhati High Court that denied him bail in a defamation case.

The bench, comprising Justices JK Maheshwari and AS Chandurkar, reserved its judgment earlier on Thursday. This legal battle traces back to an April 5 statement made by Khera, who alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, possessed passports from several foreign nations, including the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Antigua and Barbuda.

In response to Khera’s remarks, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma filed a complaint against him, asserting that his allegations were not only baseless but were also forged. The Assam Police subsequently registered a case against Khera, citing defamation, forgery, and criminal conspiracy as the crux of the matter. This incident has not only highlighted the tensions between the Congress and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam but has also raised questions about the use of legal mechanisms in political disputes.

Prior to the Supreme Court’s intervention, Khera had initially obtained transit anticipatory bail from the Telangana High Court on April 10, allowing him temporary protection from arrest while he sought to challenge the Gauhati High Court’s ruling. However, this interim protection was put on hold by the Supreme Court on April 15, directing Khera to approach the Gauhati High Court for resolution. After being denied bail there, he escalated the matter to the apex court.

This ongoing legal tussle serves as a reminder of the complexities intertwined in Indian politics, where allegations and counter-allegations often become tools for political maneuvering. As the case unfolds, it is likely to capture significant public interest, not just for its legal implications but for its potential impact on the political landscape in Assam and beyond.
