New Delhi, May 1:
In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India on Thursday granted interim protection, including anticipatory bail, to Congress leader Pawan Khera in connection with an FIR registered in Assam over certain remarks that had led to a political controversy.
A bench of the apex court observed during the hearing that the nature of the allegations did not warrant custodial interrogation at this stage. The court noted that arrest was not necessary for the purpose of investigation and extended protection to the petitioner.
The case arises from statements made by Khera during a political interaction, following which police in Assam registered charges alleging that the remarks were offensive and provocative. The matter has drawn attention in the context of political speech and legal action.
Senior counsel representing Khera argued that the complaint was motivated and that the petitioner had cooperated with the investigation. The defence submitted that there was no risk of evasion and that due legal process should be followed.
While granting relief, the Supreme Court directed Khera to cooperate with investigating authorities as required and to comply with all applicable legal procedures.
The case continues to be seen in the broader context of legal scrutiny of public statements and the balance between law enforcement and freedom of expression.
