Tamil Nadu: TVK Gains Majority Support, Vijay Moves to Form New Government

In a significant political development in Tamil Nadu, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has successfully secured the backing of the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), paving the way for Vijay to claim the position of Chief Minister. This coalition brings the total number of MLAs supporting the TVK-led government to an impressive 119, exceeding the 118 required for a majority in the 234-member Assembly.

Vijay’s party emerged as the single-largest entity in the recent state elections, winning 108 seats but initially lacking the outright majority. Following the electoral results, the Congress party, which has five MLAs, also announced its support for the TVK on Wednesday, alongside the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), which contributes two additional legislators to the coalition.

The support from the CPI and CPI(M) is crucial for TVK, as it helps cement their position in a highly competitive political landscape. However, it should be noted that both communist parties have clarified that they will not take part in the Cabinet, a decision aimed at preventing further elections and stabilizing the current administration, as stated by TT Shanmugam, the CPI(M) State Secretary. This strategic move reflects a desire for political stability in the state, especially following a contentious electoral period.

In a formal gesture to solidify his claim, Vijay met with the Tamil Nadu Governor, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, on Friday to officially stake his claim to form the government. This meeting marks a crucial step in transitioning from election results to governance, as the outgoing Chief Minister, MK Stalin of the DMK, urged the Governor to expedite the process of government formation.

The alliance between the TVK, CPI, CPI(M), Congress, and VCK appears to create a formidable force in Tamil Nadu politics, signaling a shift in power dynamics within the state. With the support of these parties, Vijay’s government is poised to pursue its agenda amidst the challenges facing the state, including economic recovery, social welfare, and governance reforms. The political maneuvering and strategic alliances formed in the aftermath of the elections will undoubtedly shape the future landscape of Tamil Nadu politics.
