Thirteen Bangladeshi Nationals Detained in Gurugram Amid Security Concerns

Thirteen Bangladeshi Nationals Detained in Gurugram Amid Security Concerns

In a significant operation on Tuesday, law enforcement authorities in Gurugram apprehended thirteen individuals, believed to be undocumented migrants from Bangladesh. The operation was initiated by the Crime Branch following specific intelligence inputs that raised concerns about national security, according to Assistant Commissioner of Police Naveen Sharma.

Sharma revealed that the detained individuals had been living in various localities across Gurugram, with some residing in slum areas and others working in construction jobs. The police conducted extensive interrogations and searches that led to the identification and detention of these persons, who reportedly possessed Bangladeshi identification documents. Furthermore, it was discovered that they were maintaining contact with family members in Bangladesh through local phone lines.

Authorities have stated that measures are underway to facilitate the deportation of these individuals. While the legal processes are being finalized, the detainees will be held at a designated center. This incident adds to the growing trend in several states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party, where Bengali-speaking individuals, predominantly Muslims, have been subjected to scrutiny regarding their citizenship status.

Since a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in April 2025, there has been a notable increase in the detention of individuals based on their linguistic and ethnic backgrounds. Many have faced pressure to verify their Indian citizenship, with reports indicating that some have been forcibly sent back to Bangladesh when they could not provide adequate proof of their nationality. In certain instances, individuals who were wrongfully deported have had to return to India after local authorities established their Indian citizenship.

The current situation highlights the complexities surrounding immigration and citizenship laws in India, particularly concerning the treatment of minority communities. As discussions on national security and identity continue to intensify, the fate of these thirteen individuals remains uncertain, serving as a stark reminder of the broader implications of such policies on human rights and individual freedoms.
