In a devastating incident that has sent shockwaves through the local community, the death toll from an ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing and export facility near Periyapalayam in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district has tragically increased to 15. The incident, which occurred on Sunday during regular industrial operations, has raised serious concerns regarding workplace safety and health regulations in the region.
The Tamil Nadu government reported that a total of 83 individuals were affected by the leak, with many suffering from severe respiratory issues. This unfortunate event highlights the precarious nature of working conditions faced by numerous laborers in the seafood processing industry, especially those who are migrants from states like Odisha, Assam, and Jharkhand.
According to the health and family welfare department, workers displayed symptoms typical of ammonia inhalation, such as breathlessness, eye irritation, coughing, and distress in the respiratory system. The alarming nature of these symptoms prompted immediate medical intervention, with 40 of the affected individuals currently receiving treatment. Among these, a significant number—38—are women, reflecting the demographic makeup of the workforce at the facility.
Currently, two patients are receiving ventilator support, while nine others are on oxygen therapy. Fortunately, 29 individuals are reported to be in stable condition, but the overall situation remains critical as authorities continue to monitor the health of those impacted.
