In a devastating incident that has sent shockwaves through the local community, the death toll from an ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing and export facility near Periyapalayam in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district has tragically increased to 15. The Tamil Nadu government reported that a total of 83 individuals were affected by the leak, with many suffering from severe respiratory issues. According to the health and family welfare department, workers displayed symptoms typical of ammonia inhalation, such as breathlessness, eye irritation, coughing, and distress in the respiratory system. Among these, a significant number—38—are women, reflecting the demographic makeup of the workforce at the facility.
