Tragedy Strikes Tamil Nadu Seafood Processing Unit: Seven Lives Lost in Ammonia Gas Leak

In a tragic incident in Tamil Nadu, seven women have lost their lives and over 67 others have been hospitalized following a catastrophic ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing facility in Tiruvallur district. The leak occurred at St. Peter’s Paul Seafoods Exports Private Limited on Sunday, deeply affecting the local community and raising serious concerns about workplace safety in the region.

The victims were primarily migrant workers, mostly women hailing from states such as Assam, Odisha, and Jharkhand. Reports indicate that the majority of these workers were residing on-site at the factory, as it was their weekly holiday. The ammonia leak originated from the processing unit where shrimp are processed and exported, quickly permeating the residential quarters where many workers were present.

Tiruvallur District Collector S. Kavitha confirmed that nine individuals suffering from critical injuries have been transferred to the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai for urgent medical care. The local police have initiated an investigation into the incident, with a case registered to uncover the exact cause of the leak.

In response to this devastating event, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has ordered the formation of a three-member enquiry committee. This committee will consist of the director of industrial safety and health, the member secretary of the Pollution Control Board, and the additional director of public health. Officials have been directed to submit a detailed report on the matter, highlighting the need for stringent measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

This incident not only underscores the precarious conditions faced by many workers in the seafood export industry but also raises alarms about the adequacy of safety protocols in place. The plight of the migrant workforce, who often work under hazardous conditions for meager wages, has once again come to the forefront of public discourse. As the investigation unfolds, many are hoping for reforms that will enhance workplace safety and protect vulnerable workers in Tamil Nadu and beyond.
