The explosion occurred while many workers were taking their lunch break, catching them off guard amidst their routine activities.
The boiler tube explosion occurred at the plant located in Singhitarai village, a site that has been crucial for power generation in the region. An unnamed official provided insights into the disaster, indicating that in addition to those on their lunch break, several individuals walking in open areas were also affected by the sudden release of steam.
Ajit Naskar, a worker from West Bengal who was present at the time of the incident, recounted the harrowing experience. He stated that the workers had just resumed their duties after lunch, preparing to paint the plant premises. “I heard a loud blast and saw smoke everywhere. We were working at a height of 17 meters, and I quickly sought refuge in a cupboard,” Naskar shared. He mentioned that around 40 to 50 workers were engaged in painting the facility when the explosion occurred, highlighting the scale of the operation and the potential for further casualties.
