Tribal Communities Raise Concerns Over Welfare Benefits and Land Rights in North Bengal

Jalpaiguri, June 22: Concerns regarding tribal welfare, land rights, and access to government benefits were raised during a visit to the Backward Classes Welfare and Tribal Development Office in Jalpaiguri.

Representatives from tribal communities and local residents highlighted several long-standing issues affecting people living in tea garden regions of North Bengal. Among the concerns raised were difficulties in accessing welfare schemes, employment opportunities, educational support, and documentation related to caste certificates and land records.

Community members also expressed concerns regarding the socio-economic conditions of tea garden workers, stating that many families continue to face financial challenges despite contributing significantly to the regional economy.

Residents called for greater transparency in the implementation of welfare programmes and requested that the government conduct regular reviews of beneficiary records to ensure that eligible individuals receive the benefits intended for them.

Local stakeholders further emphasized the importance of improving educational opportunities, skill development programmes, and employment support for tribal youth. They urged authorities to address issues related to land rights, social welfare access, and economic development in tribal areas.

Government officials have not yet issued a detailed response regarding the concerns raised. Community representatives have requested further dialogue with the administration to address these issues through appropriate legal and administrative channels.
