In a startling accusation, United States President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran conducted a drone strike on Indian ships departing from the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Trump characterized the attack as “totally rebuffed” and labeled it “totally unacceptable,” although he did not specify which Indian vessels were involved. His comments come in the wake of a series of attacks on foreign-flagged ships with Indian crew members off the coast of Oman that have raised alarms about maritime security in the region.
Between Monday and Thursday, three foreign vessels that included Indian nationals as crew members were reportedly targeted, with the U.S. government acknowledging responsibility for those incidents. Among these, a particularly tragic event occurred when a drone strike hit the Palau-flagged tanker Settebello, resulting in the loss of three Indian seafarers. These incidents have sparked outrage and concern not only in India but also among the global maritime community.
Reacting to Trump’s remarks, Esmaeil Baqaei, the spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, criticized the U.S. actions, stating that the attacks represent a threat to international peace and security. He accused the United States of engaging in what he termed “armed robbery and state piracy,” and extended condolences to the families of the deceased Indian crew members. Such diplomatic back-and-forth highlights the escalating tensions in a region that holds significant geopolitical importance due to its role in global oil transport.
In response to these developments, India’s Ministry of External Affairs has taken steps to address the situation directly with the United States. For the second time, Indian officials summoned Jason Meeks, the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, to express their strong protest regarding the ongoing American strikes on vessels carrying Indian crew members in West Asia. India has reiterated its “deep concern” over the use of lethal force against civilian shipping, describing the attacks as “unacceptable” and harmful to the safety and stability of international maritime operations.
The situation in the region is precarious, with the Strait of Hormuz being a critical chokepoint for global oil supplies. The ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran, coupled with recent attacks on merchant vessels, have raised questions about the safety of maritime routes and the protection of crew members. As India seeks to safeguard its seafarers’ interests, the government faces the dual challenge of navigating international diplomacy while ensuring the safety of its citizens abroad.
