Union Government Proposes Expansion of Lok Sabha Seats to 850 Through Delimitation Bill

In a significant move that could reshape India’s parliamentary landscape, the Union government has announced plans to introduce a bill aimed at increasing the number of Lok Sabha seats from 543 to an ambitious 850. This proposed legislation will be presented to Parliament on Thursday, marking a crucial step in the ongoing discourse surrounding electoral representation in the country.

The proposed increase will see 815 seats allocated to various states, while 35 seats will be designated for Union Territories. This announcement comes on the heels of rising speculation and discussions within political circles over the past fortnight regarding the potential for this amendment. For the first time, copies of the draft legislation were shared with Members of Parliament on Tuesday, stirring heightened interest in the implications of such a change.

Delimitation, the process of redrawing the boundaries of electoral constituencies, holds immense significance as it directly impacts political representation based on population dynamics. Article 82 of the Indian Constitution mandates that after every census, the distribution of Lok Sabha seats among states should be recalibrated in accordance with population shifts. Currently, the Lok Sabha’s composition is based on the 1971 Census, and as per the 84th Amendment Act of 2001, the boundaries of constituencies have remained unchanged until the first census post-2026.

The upcoming census, which commenced on April 1, is projected to conclude by 2027. The newly introduced bill seeks to amend Article 82 by removing the existing proviso that has effectively frozen constituency boundaries for decades. By paving the way for delimitation based on the 2011 Census data, the government aims to adjust the representation to better reflect the current demographic landscape of the nation.

As the country moves forward with this proposal, it will be crucial to consider the potential ramifications of increased representation. Experts suggest that expanding the Lok Sabha could lead to a more balanced representation of diverse communities and regions, providing a platform for voices that may have been underrepresented. However, the move may also invite challenges, particularly in terms of resource allocation and administrative adjustments.

With the Budget Session of Parliament on the horizon, the government is keen on addressing this pivotal issue that has been a topic of considerable debate. As the nation awaits the details of the bill, citizens and lawmakers alike will be watching closely to understand how this change could influence the political dynamics of the country as we approach the next elections.
