In a significant political development in Kerala, Congress leader VD Satheesan took the oath of office as the Chief Minister on Monday, leading the state’s United Democratic Front (UDF) government. This ceremony unfolded just 14 days after the Assembly election results were revealed on May 4, marking a fresh chapter in Kerala’s political landscape.
The decision to appoint Satheesan came after a period of deliberation among Congress leaders, including high-profile discussions involving Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge, which reportedly encountered some resistance from local leaders in Kerala. Ultimately, the party resolved the issue and announced Satheesan as the designated Chief Minister on Thursday.
Satheesan’s party, the Congress, achieved a remarkable victory in the recent elections, securing 102 out of 140 seats in the Assembly. This win saw them unseat the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) after a decade of rule, with the Congress itself gaining 63 seats—significantly surpassing the majority mark of 70 seats.
A seasoned politician, Satheesan has previously served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for six terms. In the recent elections, he notably defeated ET Taison of the Communist Party of India in the Paravur constituency by a decisive margin of 20,600 votes. This victory underscores his popularity and the electorate’s faith in the Congress-led coalition.
Alongside Satheesan, the new UDF Cabinet was also sworn in on the same day, comprising a diverse group of ministers. The Cabinet includes 11 members from the Congress party, featuring prominent figures like Ramesh Chennithala, Sunny Joseph, K Muraleedharan, and Bindu Krishna. Additionally, five ministers represent the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), along with one minister each from various parties such as the Kerala Congress (Joseph), Kerala Congress (Jacob), the Revolutionary Socialist Party, and the Communist Marxist Party, showcasing a multi-party coalition.
As Satheesan embarks on this new responsibility, there is a palpable sense of anticipation among the citizens of Kerala. His leadership is expected to steer the UDF government toward addressing pressing issues such as employment, healthcare, and infrastructure development. With the state now under new management, the focus will be on fostering unity and collaborative governance to ensure the welfare and progress of all segments of society.
The political narrative in Kerala has always been dynamic, and with the UDF back in power, stakeholders across the spectrum will be keenly watching how Satheesan and his Cabinet navigate the challenges ahead. As Kerala embarks on this new political journey, the hopes of many rest on the new Chief Minister’s ability to bring about positive change and development.
