Human Rights Activist Vimal Jain Announces PIL Over Alleged Digital Loan App Malpractices
New Delhi: Vimal Jain, Chairman of Human Rights Organisations, National Chief Director of the National Anti-Corruption Foundation, and associated with Manav Seva Mission, has announced plans to file a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) before the High Court seeking an investigation into alleged irregularities involving certain digital lending applications operating in India.
According to Jain, his organization has received complaints from individuals who claim to have faced difficulties after using some digital loan platforms. The complaints reportedly include allegations of excessive repayment demands, harassment during loan recovery processes, and misuse of personal data.
Jain stated that his team has been documenting complaints received from affected individuals and intends to place relevant information before the appropriate legal and regulatory authorities. He emphasized that the allegations require thorough examination by competent agencies and should be independently verified through proper investigation.
He further urged authorities to review the functioning, ownership structures, data handling practices, and recovery mechanisms of digital lending platforms operating in the country. According to Jain, consumer protection and data privacy should remain key priorities in the rapidly expanding digital lending sector.
As part of the proposed PIL, Jain plans to seek directions for a comprehensive inquiry into alleged violations of lending norms, privacy standards, and consumer rights, wherever applicable. He said the objective of the legal action is to ensure accountability and strengthen safeguards for borrowers.
Jain also appealed to media organizations, civil society groups, technology platforms, and law enforcement agencies to work together in creating greater public awareness regarding responsible borrowing practices and digital financial safety.
He noted that his organization’s research and fact-finding efforts are ongoing and that any conclusions regarding alleged misconduct should be determined only after investigation by competent authorities and due legal process.
Consumer rights advocates have increasingly highlighted the need for stronger oversight of digital lending platforms, particularly concerning transparency, recovery practices, data security, and borrower protection. Industry experts have also called for strict compliance with existing regulatory guidelines issued by financial authorities.
Jain reiterated that the primary objective of his campaign is to protect citizens from potential financial exploitation and to encourage responsible, transparent, and lawful digital lending practices.
