In a significant maritime incident, twenty Indian seafarers were safely evacuated from the bitumen tanker MT Jalveer off the coast of Oman following a reported security threat. The Union government confirmed the safety of the crew members, who were aboard the Guinea-Bissau-flagged vessel when smoke was seen emanating from the ship near the port of Shinas on Thursday.
Social media platforms were abuzz with videos capturing the dramatic scene, as plumes of smoke rose from the tanker. While the exact cause of the fire remains undetermined, the Indian diplomatic mission in Oman is actively monitoring the developing situation and coordinating efforts with local authorities to ensure the crew’s wellbeing.
The port of Shinas is strategically located near the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global oil transport, which has faced increased tensions since the outbreak of conflict in the West Asian region earlier this year. This incident unfolds just a day after a tragic event where three Indian seafarers lost their lives due to a U.S. military strike on the commercial tanker, Settebello, also off the coast of Oman. Reports indicate that twenty-one other crew members were rescued from the vessel.
In response to the military strike, the Indian government summoned the U.S. Chargé d’Affaires, Jason Meeks, to formally express its concerns and register a protest. The U.S. Central Command stated that the Settebello was targeted because it allegedly violated an American blockade restricting maritime traffic associated with Iran, with allegations suggesting it was attempting to transport oil from the Islamic Republic.
The situation escalated further when another tanker, Marivex, which transported 24 Indian seafarers, was also targeted by the U.S. military for similar reasons regarding blockade violations. Thankfully, all crew members aboard Marivex were safely rescued. The frequency of these incidents highlights the rising tensions in the region and the impact it has on Indian nationals working in the maritime sector.
Indian authorities are now faced with the dual challenge of ensuring the safety of its seafarers amid increasing geopolitical risks and maintaining diplomatic relations with the United States while addressing the concerns of Indian citizens. The government’s commitment to protect its nationals working abroad remains a priority, especially in such volatile regions.
