Shillong: The visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Shillong was accompanied by heightened security arrangements and traffic restrictions across several parts of the city on Friday. The measures led to delays for commuters and temporary disruptions to normal traffic movement.
According to officials, major roads leading to key government venues, security-sensitive locations, and event sites were placed under regulated movement as security agencies coordinated the Home Minister’s visit and related engagements.
Traffic diversions were implemented in several areas of Shillong, resulting in congestion on alternate routes. Some commuters reported longer travel times than usual, while public transport services experienced delays due to temporary road restrictions.
In parts of central Shillong, traffic movement slowed as vehicles were redirected through alternate roads. Students, office-goers, and local residents were among those affected by the diversions.
Some business owners operating near restricted zones said customer footfall was lower than usual during the security operation. Street vendors and small traders also reported reduced activity in certain areas.
Security officials stated that the arrangements were implemented in accordance with standard protocol for visits by senior national leaders. Additional police personnel were deployed at strategic locations, and surveillance and crowd-management measures were strengthened throughout the city.
Several residents suggested that advance public advisories regarding road closures and diversion routes could help commuters better plan their travel during future VIP visits.
The traffic restrictions also drew attention to Shillong’s broader traffic management challenges. Urban planning experts have previously highlighted the need for long-term solutions to address congestion during major events and high-security visits.
Following the conclusion of the Home Minister’s engagements, restrictions were gradually lifted and traffic movement returned to normal in most parts of the city.
While the visit focused on official engagements and discussions related to governance and development, the temporary traffic measures generated discussion among residents regarding the balance between security requirements and public convenience.
