Astrocytes
A Secret Brain System Discovered
April 26, 2026
Neurons and Glial cells constitute a major part of the brain activity. For centuries, science has thought that Glial cells have less importance in the brain’s functionality. Is that true?
Conventional science’s thought was that neurons formed the central activity of brain communication, and other cells supported them. Until recently, scientists have uncovered a hidden process that not only supports the neurons but also fine-tunes the signals that neurons send.
Glial cells contain many ingredients, namely, astrocytes, Oligodendrocytes, Microglia, Ependymal Cells, Schwann Cells and Satellite Cells. The one that has been found to fine-tune a neuron signal is called an “Astrocyte”.
Astrocytes are star-shaped cells that contain GFAP (intermediate Filaments) that boost the signals sent by the neurons. Normally, 2 neurons send a signal, which is actually fine-tuned by an astrocyte and transmitted. It acts as a catalyst.
They just don’t fine-tune the signal, but also collaborate with the neurons, talking with them by secreting their own chemicals, and further by directly syncing with the neurons.
Astrocytes also control the blood flow to the brain and affect the way neurons operate. When mice were injected with human astrocytes, they showed improvement in learning. They were able to figure out an easy way out of the maze quickly.
The storage capability of the brain would be a nightmare for it without Astrocytes. Furthermore, Astrocytes also serve as a maintenance agent for the neurons.
This discovery has been estimated to be of great use in the treatment of neurological diseases. Still, the human brain is a mystery to Science; this discovery of a systematised brain functioning capability has added a 3rd dimension to the subject.
