Bihar Government Renames Patna Zoo and Dairy Institute, Removing Sanjay Gandhi's Legacy

In a significant move reflecting changing political sentiments, the Bihar government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has officially removed the name of the late Congress leader Sanjay Gandhi from two prominent institutions in Patna. The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, where it was announced that the Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park will now be referred to simply as Patna Zoo, and the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Dairy Technology has been renamed the Bihar State Institute of Dairy Technology.

The Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park, which opened its doors to the public in 1973, has been a key attraction in the state capital, drawing families and wildlife enthusiasts alike. Meanwhile, the dairy technology institute, established in 1980, has played a crucial role in advancing dairy education and technology in Bihar. Both institutions have now shed the name of the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s son, signaling a shift in how the state chooses to honor its political past.

Sanjay Gandhi, known for his controversial political career, was a figure closely associated with the Emergency period in India during the 1970s. His initiatives, particularly in population control and urban development, were met with both admiration and criticism. Despite his relatively short life, as he died in a plane crash in 1980 at the age of 33, his legacy has been a point of contention in Indian politics. His wife, Maneka Gandhi, also carries political weight, having served as a Union minister in the first term of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while their son Varun Gandhi has represented the BJP in the Lok Sabha for three terms.

This renaming initiative is part of a broader trend by the current government to re-evaluate and redefine historical narratives within the state. The Cabinet meeting reportedly made over 60 decisions, indicating a substantial governmental push in various sectors, but the removal of Sanjay Gandhi’s name from these institutions has garnered particular attention. Critics argue that such actions are an attempt to rewrite history, while supporters claim it reflects a necessary distancing from a controversial political figure.

As Bihar continues to evolve politically, the implications of such changes extend beyond mere nomenclature. They represent a desire within the ruling party to align state institutions with the current administration’s vision and ethos. The move could potentially resonate with voters who seek to reclaim a narrative that emphasizes regional pride and a break from the historical figures associated with opposition parties.
