BRS Urges ECI to Strengthen Verification of Voter Registrations During Electoral Roll Revision
Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) on Wednesday urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to give special attention to the verification of voter registrations during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The party stated that the exercise should focus on identifying and removing duplicate, migrated, deceased, and other ineligible entries in accordance with established procedures.
A delegation of BRS leaders, including MLC Dasoju Sravan, former MLC Karne Prabhakar, and BRS General Secretary Ravula Chandrasekhar Reddy, met Telangana Chief Electoral Officer C. Sudharshan Reddy at BRK Bhavan and submitted a representation outlining their concerns and suggestions.
In its memorandum, the party stated that duplicate or multiple voter registrations could affect the accuracy of electoral rolls and emphasized the importance of maintaining the principle of “One Person, One Vote.” The BRS noted that Hyderabad’s position as a major employment and education hub results in significant population movement, making periodic verification of voter records important.
The party also highlighted the continued social, educational, and business connections between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh following the bifurcation of the State in 2014. It suggested enhanced coordination between the Chief Electoral Officers of both States to verify and address any potential cross-State duplicate registrations, wherever identified through due process.
Among its recommendations, the BRS proposed the use of technology-based verification tools, including de-duplication software, text-matching systems, and photo-similarity checks, to assist election authorities in maintaining accurate voter rolls. The party also called for field-level verification by Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) in cases requiring further scrutiny.
The memorandum further stressed that any deletion of voter names should be carried out only after proper notice, inquiry, and compliance with legal procedures. It also recommended a transparent grievance mechanism through which voters and recognized political parties could report suspected discrepancies and monitor the status of complaints.
The BRS reiterated that no eligible voter should be removed from the electoral rolls without due process and urged the Election Commission to ensure transparency, accountability, and fairness throughout the revision process.
