Congress Accuses BJP of Dividing Parties to Achieve Two-Thirds Lok Sabha Majority and End Reservation Policies

Congress Accuses BJP of Dividing Parties to Achieve Two-Thirds Lok Sabha Majority and End Reservation Policies

The political landscape in India is heating up as the Congress party has levelled serious allegations against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, claiming that he is orchestrating divisions within opposition parties like the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Shiv Sena to solidify a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh expressed these concerns during an interview with PTI, suggesting that the ultimate goal behind these actions is to amend the Constitution and eliminate reservation policies.

In recent weeks, both the TMC and the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray-led faction of the Shiv Sena have experienced significant turmoil, marked by defections and internal strife. On June 14, TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar revealed that 20 Lok Sabha members from her party are planning to merge with the Nationalist Citizens’ Party, a Tripura-based outfit, further aligning themselves with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This maneuver is seen as a strategic move by the BJP to weaken the TMC’s influence and expand its own political base.

Similarly, the Shiv Sena has witnessed a fracture as six of its MPs have switched allegiance to the faction led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, which is also part of the NDA. This shift has bolstered Shinde’s faction to a total of 13 MPs in the Lok Sabha, raising concerns within the party about its viability and future direction. The ongoing defections underscore the growing instability within these parties, which traditionally have enjoyed significant support in their respective regions.

Ramesh further alleged that Shah’s actions are a form of “revenge” for what he described as a humiliation following the defeat of a proposed constitutional amendment bill aimed at redrawing electoral boundaries, which was voted down in Parliament earlier this year. The 131st Amendment Bill, which is one of three proposed legislations, required a two-thirds majority to pass, showcasing the challenges the ruling NDA faces in ensuring legislative control.

Political analysts suggest that the Congress’s accusations reflect deeper concerns about the BJP’s strategies as the nation gears up for the 2024 elections. The BJP has long been criticized for its attempts to consolidate power through various means, including influencing other parties and altering key policies. If successful in its plans, the BJP could potentially reshape the political landscape in India significantly, especially concerning reservation policies that have long been a cornerstone of the nation’s affirmative action framework.

The Congress party has vowed to challenge these developments, rallying support among its base and other opposition factions to counteract what they see as an attempt to undermine democratic values and equity. As the political drama unfolds, it remains to be seen how these allegations will influence voter sentiment in the upcoming election cycle and whether the opposition can effectively unite against a formidable BJP campaign.
