In a significant move aimed at bolstering India’s artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and reducing reliance on American tech giants, India has entered into a strategic partnership with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This collaboration seeks to deploy an AI supercomputer in India, which will operate under the auspices of G42, a prominent technology company supported by the Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund, Mubadala.
The agreement, signed on May 15, revolves around the establishment of a cutting-edge AI supercomputer that will consist of 64 advanced systems manufactured by Cerebras, a renowned US chipmaker. G42 is tasked with managing the installation, operations, and maintenance of the supercomputer, while Cerebras will provide the necessary technical guidance. This initiative marks a pivotal step toward achieving AI sovereignty for India, as it aims to develop robust computing solutions on its own soil.
Currently, many governments and organizations that wish to harness AI capabilities find themselves dependent on the computing power offered by giants such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. Notably, India has already garnered commitments exceeding $45 billion from these three major corporations. The country’s own national AI program, which has a budget of $1.25 billion, relies entirely on Nvidia processors, with 34,000 units available to researchers and businesses. The ambitious goal is to reach a total of 100,000 units by the end of this year.
The collaboration with G42 introduces an alternative route for India’s AI development, allowing the nation to house its own machines, governed by its own regulations, and operated by a partner that is not based in the United States. This strategic move reflects India’s pragmatic approach to AI sovereignty, leveraging its vast scale to adapt and integrate technology from various international sources, including frontrunners in the AI space like the US and China.
As India continues to fortify its position in the global technology landscape, the partnership with the UAE serves as a key component of its strategy to foster innovation and independence in AI. With the global AI race intensifying, this initiative not only enhances India’s technological capabilities but also sets the stage for a more diversified and resilient digital economy.
