Congress Demands Independent Inquiry into Madhya Pradesh CM’s Controversial Land Acquisitions
The Congress party has raised serious questions regarding alleged land acquisitions made by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, spotlighting concerns over potential corruption linked to key infrastructure projects. During a press conference on Wednesday, state Congress president Jitu Patwari urged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to consider an independent judicial probe into these allegations, which suggest that Yadav, along with his family and associated real estate firms, has acquired substantial parcels of land in strategic locations.
Patwari’s remarks come on the heels of an investigative report published by The Indian Express, which claims that since taking office on December 13, 2023, Yadav and his family have purchased at least 137 plots for a staggering total of Rs 45 crore. These lands are reportedly situated near various infrastructure initiatives, notably around Ujjain, a city renowned for its rich religious heritage and tourism potential. The timing and location of these purchases have raised eyebrows, as many properties are in areas slated for development, with significant alterations in land use planned under the Ujjain Master Plan 2035, particularly transitioning from agricultural to residential and commercial designations.
Ujjain, a vital hub for religious tourism, has been at the forefront of several infrastructural upgrades in recent years, aimed at enhancing visitor experiences and accessibility. This context adds a layer of complexity to the allegations against Yadav, who has represented the Ujjain (South) constituency in the state assembly since 2013. Patwari questioned the ethical implications of these land deals, particularly emphasizing the plight of local farmers who may be adversely affected by such transactions.
Furthermore, the Congress leader called for Yadav to publish a comprehensive white paper detailing all land acquisitions made since he assumed the chief ministership. This demand reflects the Congress party’s strategy to hold the BJP accountable for governance and ethical standards, seeking transparency in a political landscape often marred by accusations of favoritism and vested interests.
As the political environment in Madhya Pradesh heats up, the BJP’s response to these allegations will be crucial. Will they permit an independent inquiry to investigate the claims? The outcome of this situation could significantly impact the political fortunes of both the Congress and BJP in the state, especially as Madhya Pradesh gears up for future elections.
