Congress Urges Investigation into Recent Tragedies in Manipur Amid Rising Tensions

The Congress party has called for a thorough investigation into the recent tragic killings in Manipur, which include the deaths of two innocent children. This appeal comes in light of escalating violence in the state, with the party demanding immediate action to restore peace and security.

The horrific incident occurred on April 7 in the village of Tronglaobi, located in Bishnupur district, where a five-year-old boy and a five-month-old girl lost their lives after a projectile reportedly struck their home while the family was asleep. Residents have alleged that the projectile was fired from the nearby hill slopes, with suspicions pointing towards Kuki militants. In response, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum, representing the Kuki community, has denied any involvement, calling for a fair assessment of the situation.

Inner Manipur MP A Bimol Akoijam expressed grave concerns over the safety of citizens, asserting that both the central government and the state administration, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have failed in their duty to protect the lives of the people of Manipur. The Congress has urged the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to take swift action, submitting a charter of demands that includes the establishment of a time-bound inquiry into these tragic events.

Since the outbreak of ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo-Hmar communities in May 2023, tensions in the region have escalated significantly. The proximity of the village to the hill areas of Churachandpur has made it a flashpoint for violence, raising fears among local residents. In addition to the investigation, Congress is advocating for compensation for the victims’ families and institutional reforms aimed at restoring normalcy in the strife-torn region.

The ongoing turmoil has led to immense distress within the community, with citizens demanding accountability and justice. As the political landscape continues to shift, the focus remains on how the government will respond to the rising violence and ensure the safety of all residents. The Congress party’s demands signify a critical moment in addressing the underlying issues plaguing Manipur, and many citizens hope for a swift resolution and a return to peace.
