Pumpkin Cultivation in Bokakhat’s Sohola Fields Expands to National and International Markets

Bokakhat:

Pumpkin cultivation in the Sohola and Jogoniyaati villages of Bokakhat has emerged as a significant example of large-scale agricultural production, with farmers cultivating pumpkins across more than 2,000 bighas of land.

According to local sources, farmers in the region have collectively produced over 3,000 tons of pumpkins this season. The produce is being supplied to markets in Nepal and Indian states including West Bengal, Tripura, and the city of Delhi.

Farmer Kewal Chetry from Sohola village reported that shipments are being sent in bulk to different locations. On April 22, consignments were dispatched to multiple destinations, reflecting growing demand for the produce.

The initiative involves nearly 200 farmers and has received support from the local agriculture department, Numaligarh Refinery Limited, and the Bihongam Agricultural Production Company. Seeds were provided to farmers through these organizations to encourage large-scale cultivation.

Farmers stated that pumpkins are currently being sold at around ₹14.50 per kilogram, which is significantly higher compared to last year’s price range of ₹3 to ₹4.50 per kilogram. The improved pricing and early harvest have contributed to better earnings this season.

However, farmers highlighted challenges in accessing direct markets, as most of the produce is sold through intermediaries. They noted that prices in retail markets, particularly in Delhi, are higher, but the benefits are not fully reaching producers due to the involvement of agents.

In addition, logistical issues such as loading large quantities onto trucks remain a concern. Despite these challenges, farmers remain optimistic about the profitability of pumpkin cultivation.

Experts suggest that the high production levels in the region present opportunities for establishing local processing units for pumpkin-based products, which could further enhance income for farmers.
