The Supreme Court of India has intervened in a significant legal case by temporarily halting the conviction and life sentence of Amit Jogi, the son of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi, in connection to a 2003 murder that has long cast a shadow over the state’s political landscape. This ruling was delivered on Thursday, following a series of legal battles that have spanned over two decades and caught the attention of the national media.
Amit Jogi was found guilty by the Chhattisgarh High Court on April 2 of conspiracy to murder Ramvatar Jaggi, the treasurer of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Jaggi was shot dead in broad daylight in Raipur in June 2003, a time when Ajit Jogi was serving as the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh. The murder occurred just days before a crucial NCP rally, raising suspicions that it was politically motivated, aimed at disrupting the party’s challenge to the Congress government at that time.
After Amit Jogi’s conviction on April 6, the High Court sentenced him to life imprisonment, a decision that sparked outrage and concern regarding the judicial process. During the latest hearing, a Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and Vijay Bishnoi expressed disbelief at the proceedings that led to Jogi’s conviction without affording him the opportunity to present his defense. “What kind of judgment… conviction and sentence before hearing?” the bench questioned, reflecting the court’s commitment to ensuring fair legal representation.
The High Court’s ruling followed a convoluted legal history where, in May 2007, a trial court had convicted 28 individuals for their involvement in Jaggi’s murder, while Amit Jogi was acquitted at that time. However, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sought to overturn this acquittal in 2011, only for the High Court to dismiss their application due to procedural delays. The case saw multiple appeals, including those from the Chhattisgarh government and Satish Jaggi, the victim’s son, all of which were ultimately turned down.
