Delhi Government Announces 20% Reservation for Agniveers in Group C Recruitment

Delhi Government Announces 20% Reservation for Agniveers in Group C Recruitment

In a significant move aimed at supporting former Agniveers, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, announced on Thursday that 20% of vacancies for Group C positions in the Delhi government will be reserved for these individuals. This initiative encompasses various roles, including police constables, fire services personnel, jail wardens, forest guards, and wildlife guards, among others.

The Agnipath scheme, introduced by the Indian government, allows young citizens aged between 17 and a half to 21 years to enlist in the armed forces for a four-year term. Post this tenure, approximately 25% of the recruits will be retained for an extended service of 15 years, thus providing them with a pathway to a stable career in the military.

Highlighting the urgency of this initiative, Sandhu stated that a deadline of June 30 has been set for government departments to finalize their recruitment processes and amend the necessary rules. Additionally, these departments have been instructed to harness the specialized skills of former Agniveers to meet their operational needs effectively. This move not only aids in the reintegration of former soldiers into civilian roles but also enhances the overall efficiency of government services.

Earlier in March, the Union Home Ministry had directed the Delhi Police to reserve 20% of constable (executive) posts exclusively for former Agniveers. This also includes certain concessions such as exemptions from physical efficiency tests and an extended age limit by three years, facilitating a smoother transition into policing roles. It is noteworthy that the Delhi Police operates under the jurisdiction of the Union government, which underscores the collaboration between state and central authorities in fortifying this initiative.

In a related development, neighboring Haryana had announced in April 2025 its plan to double the reservation for Agniveers in police recruitment to 20%, reflecting a growing recognition of the valuable contributions these former armed forces members can make in safeguarding public safety and order.

As India continues to modernize its defense recruitment processes, the Agnipath initiative has become a focal point of discussions around military enlistment and post-service opportunities. With the government actively seeking to provide support to Agniveers through various job reservations, this latest announcement by the Delhi government underscores a commitment to valuing their service and ensuring their successful integration into civilian life.
