Election Commission Enforces Restrictions for West Bengal Polling Booths Ahead of Assembly Elections

In a significant move to ensure a smooth electoral process, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has imposed restrictions on non-residents in housing complexes designated as polling booths for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. According to reports from The Times of India, the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal, Manoj Agarwal, stated that only constituents eligible to vote in the area will be allowed access to these residential complexes during the election period.

This directive aims to prevent any potential electoral malpractices and ensure that the integrity of the voting process is maintained. The ban on ‘outsiders’ will remain in effect until the conclusion of the second phase of voting, which is scheduled for April 29. Election results are expected to be announced on May 4, marking a critical period for political parties vying for power in the state.

The restrictions come on the heels of an announcement by the Election Commission that included measures to regulate motorcycle movements at night and a prohibition on tourists visiting Digha, a popular beach destination in West Bengal. These steps are part of the ECI’s broader strategy to ensure public safety and order during the election period.

Additionally, the Commission has mandated a 96-hour ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages leading up to the polling dates. This extended prohibition is noteworthy as it exceeds the usual 48-hour liquor ban implemented nationwide before elections. Such measures reflect a commitment to reducing distractions and potential disturbances in the lead-up to the polls, ensuring voters can make decisions in a calm and focused environment.

As the state gears up for these crucial elections, the spotlight is on maintaining electoral integrity and public order. Voters will be casting their ballots in two phases, with a diverse array of candidates representing various parties, making this election an important event in West Bengal’s political landscape.
