EV Recharging Lanes Could Shape the Future of Indian Roads

India is steadily moving towards electric mobility, and one technology gaining global attention is the concept of EV recharging lanes — specially designed roads capable of wirelessly charging electric vehicles while they are in motion.

Several countries, including Sweden, Germany, and South Korea, have already begun testing dynamic charging road systems using electric coils embedded beneath highways. The technology allows compatible electric vehicles to receive power without stopping at charging stations.

Industry experts believe such infrastructure could offer long-term benefits for India, particularly in major cities like Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Mumbai, where long commutes and traffic congestion often impact EV battery performance.

According to analysts, EV recharging lanes could initially be explored on expressways, public transport corridors, and high-traffic commercial routes. Vehicles equipped with compatible wireless charging systems may be able to recharge while driving, potentially reducing dependence on large battery packs and minimizing charging downtime.

Experts also suggest that the technology could support electric buses, commercial fleets, and delivery vehicles by improving operational efficiency and reducing charging interruptions.

However, large-scale implementation would require significant investment, advanced infrastructure planning, standardized vehicle compatibility, and extensive safety testing. Electricity demand management and long-term maintenance costs are also expected to be key challenges.

Despite these hurdles, many industry observers believe dynamic charging infrastructure may become an important part of future transportation systems as India continues focusing on clean energy and sustainable mobility solutions.
