Exploring the Impact of the HIV Epidemic on India's LGBTQIA+ Community: A New Book and a Powerful Skit

In a thought-provoking new book, a queer activist delves into the implications of the HIV epidemic on the health and mental well-being of the LGBTQIA+ community in India. This exploration poses critical questions: How might the narrative around sex, sexuality, and gender diversity have evolved without the HIV crisis? Would these crucial issues have gained visibility in public discourse and become integral to the human rights dialogue in India? Furthermore, how would the trajectory of queer movements in the country differ today?

These reflective topics surfaced during a community dialogue held in Kolkata at Café Adda Ghor, following the enactment of a poignant skit titled Koti Ki Atma. This performance, which took place in November 2023, was a modern reenactment of a 20-minute play originally crafted by the Integration Society and Counsel Club, a queer support group, back in January 2001. Blending elements of proscenium and street theatre, the skit employed humor, a ghostly narrative, and emotional depth to foster discussions around HIV prevention, testing, safer sex, self-esteem, and empowerment within queer communities.

When the original skit premiered over two decades ago, society’s attitudes towards non-normative genders and sexualities were steeped in stigma and criminalization. At that juncture, queer representation within the National AIDS Control Programme was still emerging, and access to HIV treatment through anti-retroviral therapy (ART) was still years away. The challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community were exacerbated by a lack of awareness and acceptance, making initiatives like these critical in shifting public perception and policy.

Throughout this time, Koti Ki Atma was only performed a handful of times, primarily at community events. Its revival in 2023 speaks volumes about the ongoing struggle and resilience of LGBTQIA+ individuals in advocating for their rights and health. The dialogue that followed the performance highlighted the importance of continued engagement and discussion within the community, reaffirming that the fight for acceptance and equal rights is far from over.

This renewed focus on the intersection of health and identity among queer individuals is more relevant than ever. As India grapples with the legacy of the HIV epidemic, it becomes essential to confront these historical contexts while pushing for a future where all forms of love and expression are celebrated and protected. The reflections from the community dialogue serve as a reminder that understanding the past is crucial to forging a more inclusive and equitable future for generations to come.
