Four Traditional Assam Products Receive GI Tag

Guwahati: Assam has achieved a significant milestone in the promotion and preservation of its cultural heritage, with four traditional products from the state receiving Geographical Indication (GI) tags.

The products are Karbi Anglong Handloom Products, Assam Bihu Pepa, Assam Bamboo Crafts, and Deuri Handloom Products. The recognition highlights the unique cultural identity, traditional craftsmanship and historical significance associated with these products.

Geographical Indication status provides legal protection to products that possess qualities or characteristics linked to a specific geographical region. The recognition is expected to help safeguard the authenticity of these traditional products and strengthen their identity in the marketplace.

Industry observers and stakeholders believe that GI recognition can contribute to greater visibility for local artisans, weavers and craftsmen by creating opportunities in domestic and international markets. The designation may also help promote traditional skills and encourage the preservation of indigenous craftsmanship.

Representatives from artisan and cultural communities have welcomed the development, expressing hope that the recognition will support livelihoods and encourage younger generations to continue practicing traditional crafts.

The addition of these products to the GI registry further highlights Assam’s rich cultural heritage and its long-standing traditions in handloom, handicrafts and folk culture.
