Fuel Prices Surge Again: Third Hike in Just Over a Week Amid Global Tensions

In a worrying development for consumers, petrol and diesel prices have been raised for the third time in less than a week, marking a significant shift in the dynamics of fuel pricing in India. As global oil prices remain elevated due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, Indian oil marketing companies have had no choice but to adjust their rates accordingly.

On Saturday, the price of petrol in the national capital, Delhi, saw an increment of 87 paise, bringing the new rate to Rs 99.51 per litre from Rs 98.64. Diesel, too, witnessed a hike of 91 paise, now costing Rs 92.49, up from Rs 91.5. This is part of a series of adjustments that have stirred unrest among consumers, already grappling with the rising cost of living.

Similar increases were observed in other major cities across the country. In Kolkata, petrol prices surged by 94 paise to reach Rs 110.6, while diesel shot up by 95 paise, reaching Rs 97 per litre. Mumbai residents faced similar challenges as petrol prices rose by 90 paise to Rs 108.4 per litre, while diesel increased by 94 paise to Rs 95 per litre. Chennai also reported a hike in fuel costs, with petrol now priced at Rs 105.3 per litre after an increase of 82 paise, and diesel going up by 87 paise to mark Rs 96.9 per litre.

This latest adjustment follows a substantial hike earlier this month, where both petrol and diesel prices saw increases of approximately Rs 3 per litre on May 15. Just four days later, on May 19, oil marketing companies again raised fuel prices, citing the ongoing strain brought on by soaring global crude oil prices.

The backdrop of these increases is the persistent volatility in the international oil market, primarily driven by geopolitical tensions and supply constraints. The benchmark Brent crude oil price traded at $103 per barrel on Friday, having briefly spiked to $106. This high pricing environment continues to exert pressure on Indian oil companies, forcing them to pass on the costs to consumers.

As fuel prices hit unprecedented levels, the government faces increasing scrutiny regarding its ability to manage the economic fallout. Rising fuel costs can have a cascading effect on inflation, impacting everything from transportation to food prices, thereby affecting the common man’s pocket. Consumers are left wondering about the sustainability of fuel prices and how long the government can maintain this trajectory of hikes without significant backlash from the public.

The frequency and scale of these hikes also raise questions about the long-term strategy of oil marketing companies and the government’s plans to cushion the impact on consumers. With the current trajectory, it’s clear that the Indian public will have to brace themselves for more adjustments in fuel prices unless there is a significant change in the global oil market or a strategic policy shift by the government to stabilize these costs.
