The Gujarat High Court has decided to extend the temporary bail of controversial religious figure Asumal Harpalani, commonly known as Asaram Bapu, until June 15, in connection with a 2013 rape conviction. The court had initially granted him bail on medical grounds on November 6, following the suspension of his sentence. Asaram, who has been embroiled in legal battles since his conviction, sought further extension, which the court has now approved.
A division bench comprising Justices Ilesh J. Vora and R.T. Vachchani deliberated on the matter, emphasizing that the decision was influenced by Asaram’s medical condition and the absence of any reported issues during his temporary release. His legal team argued for the necessity of continued medical attention, asserting that he requires consistent monitoring, regular assessments, and quick access to emergency medical services.
In contrast, the state government opposed the extension, raising concerns over an ongoing appeal before the Rajasthan High Court regarding another case of sexual assault involving Asaram. They urged the Gujarat High Court to deny the extension, citing public interest and the serious nature of the charges against him. Despite these arguments, the High Court chose to grant him additional time, scheduling a further hearing for June 12.
This latest development comes on the heels of the Rajasthan High Court’s decision to extend Asaram’s interim bail until May 25 or until a verdict on his appeal is reached, whichever occurs first. In 2018, a Jodhpur sessions court sentenced him to life imprisonment for raping a minor, a conviction that has sparked widespread media attention and public discourse regarding the intersection of religion and law in India.
The case has not only drawn significant legal scrutiny but has also highlighted the broader issues of sexual violence and justice in the country. Asaram, who has a substantial following, continues to maintain his innocence and has garnered support from various quarters, complicating the public’s perception of the case. As the situation evolves, all eyes will be on the upcoming hearings to see how the courts navigate this complex legal landscape.
