Historic Moment: Congress to Rejoin Tamil Nadu Cabinet After 59 Years

In a significant development for Tamil Nadu politics, the Congress party is set to re-enter the state’s Cabinet, marking its first participation in 59 years. The induction of two of its Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) into the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government is scheduled for Thursday, a momentous occasion that highlights the changing dynamics in the state’s political landscape.

On Wednesday, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal announced the decision, revealing that party president Mallikarjun Kharge has given the green light for the inclusion of MLAs S Rajesh Kumar and P Viswanathan in the Council of Ministers. Venugopal expressed his enthusiasm on social media, stating, “This is a historic occasion for us, as the Congress joins the Tamil Nadu cabinet after a long gap of 59 years!” He expressed confidence that the newly inducted ministers would meet the expectations and aspirations of the Tamil populace, emphasizing their commitment to realizing the welfare and governance vision put forth by Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

The expansion of Chief Minister Vijay’s Cabinet will see over 20 new ministers take their oaths of office and secrecy on Thursday at Lok Bhavan, administered by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. The TVK, which has made its electoral debut, emerged as the largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections held on May 4, securing 108 out of 234 seats, although it fell short of an outright majority.

This development comes as a surprise to many, considering the historical context of Congress’s absence from the state Cabinet. The party, which played a pivotal role in Tamil Nadu’s politics for decades, has seen a decline in its influence in the state over the years, with regional parties such as the AIADMK and DMK taking the forefront. The return of Congress to the Cabinet could signal a shift in the political landscape, potentially reshaping alliances and strategies as the TVK seeks to establish itself in the governance of Tamil Nadu.

As the state gears up for this new chapter, the expectations are high from the Congress leaders who are expected to bring fresh perspectives and foster inclusive governance. The people of Tamil Nadu are watching closely, eager to see how this historic re-entry will impact local politics and contribute to the welfare of the state.
