India Accelerates Nuclear Modernization with Focus on Long-Range Weapons Targeting China

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has revealed that India is intensifying its nuclear modernization efforts, particularly in developing long-range weapons capable of reaching targets throughout China. This strategic shift underscores India’s ongoing commitment to strengthen its defense capabilities amid rising regional tensions.

Despite this focus on enhancing its nuclear arsenal, the SIPRI report highlights that India’s nuclear strategy continues to be significantly influenced by its historical rivalry with Pakistan. In fact, India has reportedly increased its nuclear warheads to 190—an addition of 10 since last year—while Pakistan maintains its stockpile at 170 warheads, demonstrating a sustained focus on enhancing its own nuclear capabilities.

The SIPRI’s assessment indicates that both nations are actively expanding their nuclear delivery systems. India, for instance, has been pursuing new technology to bolster its existing frameworks, which plays a crucial role in its defense planning. Additionally, the report draws attention to a four-day military conflict in May 2025, during which India targeted Pakistani air and missile bases suspected of having nuclear-related functions. Fortunately, both countries took measures to prevent the situation from escalating further, showcasing an awareness of the potential consequences of such actions.

Meanwhile, China remains a significant player in the nuclear arms race. The report estimates that China possesses around 620 nuclear warheads and is rapidly expanding its inventory at an unprecedented rate compared to other nations. Analysts warn that by the end of the decade, China could match the intercontinental ballistic missile capabilities of established powers like Russia and the United States, thereby altering the strategic landscape in the region.

SIPRI’s broader analysis indicates that, as of January 2026, the global nuclear arsenal comprises approximately 12,187 warheads, highlighting the persistent nuclear threats that nations face. With such developments unfolding, India’s proactive approach to its nuclear capabilities reflects its strategic necessity to safeguard national interests, particularly in the context of its neighbors.
