New Delhi, May 2: The Central Government is conducting a test of its Emergency Alert System on May 2, under the supervision of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). As part of this exercise, mobile phone users in selected regions may receive an alert message accompanied by a loud siren-like sound.
The system, known as SACHET (Signaling Application for Centralized Alert Protocol), has been developed to enable timely communication with citizens during natural disasters and emergency situations. The test is being carried out in coordination with the Department of Telecommunications to evaluate the effectiveness and reach of the system.
Officials have clarified that this is only a test alert, and citizens should not panic upon receiving such notifications. The alert may override silent mode on mobile devices and appear as a high-priority message with sound and vibration.
The primary objective of the system is to ensure rapid dissemination of critical information during emergencies such as earthquakes, floods, and other disasters. Authorities have also advised that there is no need to respond to the test message.
The Emergency Alert System is being gradually implemented across states and Union Territories to strengthen India’s disaster preparedness and response mechanism.
