India has initiated construction of its first Ethanol-to-Jet (ETJ) Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) plant in Andhra Pradesh, marking a development in the country’s renewable energy and aviation sectors. The project aims to explore alternative fuel options for reducing emissions in aviation.
The facility is being developed at the green energy hub of NTPC Limited in Pudimadaka, near Atchuthapuram in Anakapalle district. The project is being implemented in collaboration with GPS Renewables.
According to project details, the plant is expected to have a production capacity of approximately 1,800 tonnes per annum of sustainable aviation fuel. It is also expected to produce renewable diesel as a by-product. The project is targeted for completion by March 2029, followed by a period of operational stabilization.
The ETJ process involves multiple stages, including conversion of ethanol into ethylene, followed by chemical processing to produce aviation-grade fuel that meets industry standards. Officials state that using ethanol derived from renewable sources could help lower emissions compared to conventional fossil-based aviation fuels.
Technology support for the project is being provided by Lummus Technology, while detailed engineering work is being handled by Xytel India.
Industry experts note that sustainable aviation fuel is currently considered one of the practical options for reducing carbon emissions in aviation, as it can be used with existing aircraft systems.
The development is also seen as part of India’s broader efforts to expand its renewable energy capacity and reduce dependence on imported fuels.
