Internal Strife Erupts in Ayodhya Over Allegations of Financial Misconduct in Ram Temple Fund
Ayodhya, a city that holds significant historical and religious importance for millions of Hindus, is currently witnessing a tumultuous conflict within the Sangh Parivar, as serious allegations of financial misconduct surrounding the Ram temple have surfaced. At the heart of this controversy is Dharm Das, a prominent seer who has been a pivotal figure in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement since its inception. In the late 1940s, his guru ignited a fierce dispute by placing an idol of Lord Ram inside the Babri Masjid, a move that would change the course of Indian politics and religion.
This long-standing conflict culminated in the tragic demolition of the mosque in 1992 by a mob, significantly bolstering the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) rise to power. Fast forward to 2024, the Ram temple finally stands tall on the site, symbolizing a victory for those who have championed the cause for decades. However, just two years after its completion, the temple has become embroiled in serious allegations regarding the misappropriation of funds and valuables contributed by devotees.
Dharm Das, now in his seventies, expressed deep concern over these allegations, stating, “All the sadhus here are upset. The prime minister needs to give this his attention.” His frustration is directed towards the trust established by the Narendra Modi-led government in 2020, which was set up to oversee the construction of the temple following a Supreme Court verdict. This trust, intended to be a guardian of the sacred funds, is now under scrutiny as allegations of theft and embezzlement surface.
Opposition leaders, along with a whistleblower, have raised alarms about the temple staff reportedly pilfering cash and jewelry offerings made by the devotees. These claims have prompted the Uttar Pradesh government to form a special investigation team to look into the matter. Yet, as investigations are underway, an official First Information Report (FIR) has not been filed, raising questions about the seriousness of the inquiry and the integrity of those involved in temple management.
The backdrop to this situation is a complex narrative of faith, politics, and power. The Ram temple’s construction was seen by many as not only a spiritual milestone but also a political victory for the BJP and its affiliates. With the temple now a symbol of national identity for many Hindus, the surfacing of these allegations poses a significant threat to its sanctity and the credibility of those who manage it. As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the government and temple authorities will respond to restore faith among devotees and ensure transparency in the management of funds.
